Changing the face of Construction in Michigan

After years of parody and a lack of accountability in Michigan builders certifications, it seems
that through a concerted effort with the Home Builders Association and the State of
Michigan, we may finally be seeing a change in the way licensing and training is enforced.

All areas of the trades, electrical, heating, and plum
bing require apprenticeships and training
which is rigorously documented and accounted.  However, the most important and seemingly
least qualified is the builder or general contractor.   There have been no trade experience
requirements or training necessary to obtain a Residential Builders License in Michigan until
now.  Though it has been good for employment, the opinion of many is that it has diluted the
talent, and diminished the quality of work in many areas.

Though the new certification requirements are still being finalized, and continuing
education is becoming mandatory for license renewal, the question remains; "Does a
Builders License make you a quality builder?"  Many in Michigan are faced with tight
budgets in our stifled economy, and are compelled to seek out less costly contractors.  Lower
cost doesn't always translate to good value or high quality.  In fact, consumers should seek
multiple options, concise and comprehensive estimates, and compare them carefully to
ensure that they are indeed getting their money's worth.  Many times, a quality contractor
with an honest and competitive quote will lose out to substandard workmanship, lower quality
materials, and poor customer service.  Generally speaking, you get what you pay for...

So, this new legislature, though not perfect, may be a step in the right direction to bringing
quality and accountability back to the forefront of Michigan home building.  With the help of
educated consumers, and contractors who pride themselves on quality and performance, the
future of housing in Michigan may again be on the forefront of our economy.
Improve your Home With NJK

Everyone is feeling the financial crunch these days, and the choice to build or improve is the
decision.  Though the finance industry has tightened the noose, there are options available
to those looking to move up, or add equity to what they have.  We have found reputable and
dependable associates in both the lending and marketing side to help with all of your needs.
Getting financed, getting out of your house, or improving your property can be done
efficiently and effectively with the right group of people.

On the improvement side, the popular fixes have been basement finishes, kitchen and bath
remodels, new siding and roofing, and additions.  Although these are substantial projects,
they can be affordable and long lasting improvements to your home.  In fact, the value of a
finished basement is quickly realized with living space, and comfort.  It is easy to add as
much as 70% of your main floor living space to your basement, for about 30-40% of the cost
to build a new structure.  In addition, there is no displacement or moving expense.  Our real
estate market seems to lean more toward finished basements these days, and with the proper
planning, the space can be multi-functional.

Another improvement that can add quick and long lasting refreshment is new flooring and
paint.  The difference you can have with the installation of a new floor and a change of
color is immediately realized, and can even change the comfort of your house.  For
example, the installation of a wood floor where there is existing tile can change the warmth
of a room both climatically and atmospherically.  Not only will you feel different, but your
feet will be warmer too.
